In this article by Minelab Metal Detector, we’ll explore why diamonds are not detectable using traditional metal detecting technology. Many assume a metal detector can uncover all kinds of buried treasure — including diamonds — but that’s not the case.

The short answer is no: standard metal detectors cannot detect diamonds. That’s because diamonds are not metal and don’t react to the electromagnetic fields generated by metal detectors.

Why Not?

Metal detectors work by generating electromagnetic fields that react to conductive materials. Metals like gold, silver, iron, and aluminum are easily detected because they conduct electricity.

Diamonds, however, are made of carbon and are excellent insulators. They don’t conduct electricity, so a metal detector won’t respond to them. Even the most advanced consumer detectors can’t pick up on diamonds directly.

Are There Any Exceptions?

While metal detectors can’t find diamonds themselves, they can help in other ways. Diamonds are sometimes found in rock formations like kimberlite, which may contain small amounts of metal. A detector might alert you to these metals, indirectly pointing you to a diamond-bearing area. However, this method is unreliable and used more in professional geological surveys.

Specialized Equipment

Advanced tools like ground-penetrating radar or X-ray fluorescence detect diamonds or diamond-rich areas more accurately. These are expensive, require training, and are typically used by mining companies rather than hobbyists.

Final Thoughts

If you’re using a metal detector to find diamonds, you’re using the wrong tool. Focus instead on areas known for natural diamond deposits and learn about the geology of those regions. Techniques like panning, sluicing, and visual inspection are more effective for finding rough diamonds.

A metal detector is excellent for finding coins, relics, and sometimes gold — but when it comes to diamonds, knowledge and location matter far more than equipment.
